This Ethiopian Sidamo Natural Process coffee is sourced by our brokers as a an organic (before shipment to the USA) and FairTrade African coffee from family-owned farms of the Shanta Golba Cooperative, which is located in the Bensa district. The Shanta Golba Cooperative is part of the Sidamo Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (or SCFCU). SCFCU was formed in 2001 with a mission to support sustainable coffee production from cooperatives in the Sidamo region. This Rwandan coffee comes to Toomer’s Coffee Roasters™ from a group of 975 specialty coffee farmers that are members of the Kibirizi Coffee Washing Station.
These specialty coffee farmers manage their farms which are located 1800 – 2500 meters above sea level. The Kibirizi Coffee Washing Station, located in Nyaza, Rwanda, is 325 hectares in size and produces 900 tons of coffee cherries annually.
Rwanda produces a small fraction of the global coffee supply, but what it is lacking in
volume it makes up for in extraordinary coffees with unique attributes. After suffering the deep trauma and tragedy of genocide in recent years, Rwanda’s coffee farmers are committed to a prosperity. Diverse producers from different backgrounds are forming co-operatives to build better lives for their families and their communities.
